The main duties of ushers in the Chamber are attending to Members, including robing the Ceann Comhairle, switching microphones, managing access and circulating papers.
In the Chamber
An usher escorts the Ceann Comhairle or Leas-Cheann Comhairle to the Chamber at the start of a sitting day and assists with their robing. While in the Chamber, ushers manage the switching of microphones between speakers, circulate hard copies of ministerial speeches and replies to oral and written questions, deal with requests from Deputies and oversee access, especially during votes.
Visitor access
Ushers also oversee visitor access to Leinister House, which is administered through the visitor management system, and conduct tours of the building. Visitors can include tour groups present at the invitation of Members as well as heads of state and ambassadors, for whom ushers ensure the correct protocols are in place, including who will meet them on the steps of Leinster House and the level of security required.
Safety and security
Ushers play an important role in ensuring the safety and security of Members and staff. The security of Leinster House is the responsbility of the Superintendent of the Houses, assisted by the Captain of the Guard and the Head Usher.
If the fire or evacuation alarm is sounded, staff and Members should follow the instructions of ushers, service officers and fire wardens.
All accidents and near misses should be immediately reported to the Head Usher at ext 2371. Most of the ushers are trained in administering first aid.
