Vol. 346 No. 10

Written Answers. - Cattle Numbers.

33.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Agriculture the plans he has to ensure an upward turn in cattle numbers, particularly in beef cow numbers.

The upward trend in cattle numbers is assisted by the headage grants in disadvantaged areas, the calved heifer scheme and the EEC suckler cow and calf premium schemes. Under these schemes an extra beef cow and calf can qualify this year for total grants of as much as £169 in the severely handicapped areas, £150 in the less severely handicapped areas and £118 outside these areas. These generous grants provide a worthwhile incentive to farmers to increase their beef cow numbers.
