Vol. 542 No. 2
467 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on whether extra Garda strength is required in Cork city; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24250/01]
I am informed by the Garda authorities, which are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that the current personnel strength of Cork City Division, as at 1 October 2001, is 604. This compares to a figure of 541 in December 1997. The above figures represent an increase of 63, or 11.65%, in the personnel allocated to Cork city during that period. I am further informed by the Garda authorities that local Garda management is satisfied that the personnel strength currently allocated to Cork city is adequate to meet the present policing requirements of the area. However, the levels will be kept under review and when additional personnel next become available the needs of Cork city will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
