It has not been possible to collate the information requested in the time allowed. I will write to the Deputy directly when the information is to hand.
The following deferred reply was received under Standing Order 51.
I refer to Parliamentary Question No. 202 of the 1 May 2024 where you sought: “To ask the Minister for Justice the number of persons that were successful at stages 1 and 2 of the Garda trainee application process that were deemed to be generally unsuitable to be offered a place in phase 1 of Garda training in the past three years.”
You will recall that the information could not be obtained in the time available, and I undertook to consult with An Garda Síochána and contact you again when the requested information was available.
As you are aware, under the Garda Síochána Act 2005 (as amended), the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the administration and management of An Garda Síochána, including responsibility for the recruitment, training and distribution of Garda members. As Minister, I have no role in these matters.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that since the commencement of the 2022 Garda Trainee competition, less than 10 candidates as of 1 May 2024 have been confirmed as generally unsuitable to be offered a place on Phase 1 of Garda Training. Please note generally unsuitable is taken to mean unsuitable based on vetting returns.
I trust this information is of assistance.
