The Government has repeatedly and unequivocally condemned Hamas and its heinous and horrific terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, in which over 1,200 people were killed. The deliberate and systematic targeting of civilians can never be justified. The taking and holding of hostages, including young children, is reprehensible and unconscionable. We continue to call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas.

Hamas is a despicable and illegal terrorist organisation, which offers nothing to the Palestinian people but death and suffering.

The Government has at all times been clear that there must be accountability for all violations of international law, including violations committed by Hamas. All parties to armed conflict – states and non-states alike – have obligations under international law. Any actions contrary to these obligations are completely unacceptable and must be utterly rejected and condemned.
