Questions (420)

Richard Boyd Barrett

Question:

420. Deputy Richard Boyd Barrett asked the Minister for Health if her Department will review a decision not to include a glucose monitoring system (details supplied) for persons with type two diabetes for reimbursement under either the DPS or the long-term illness scheme; if she will explain the rationale for excluding it; her views on the prohibitive costs, especially in the case of older persons in receipt of a State pension who have to pay €400 per month, and the financial burden this places on them in trying to manage their diabetes effectively; if she will commit to making a strong case for its inclusion as a matter of priority given the health costs to the State as a result of mismanagement of diabetes; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Under the Health (Pricing and Supply of Medical Goods) Act 2013, the HSE has statutory responsibility for decisions on the pricing and reimbursement of medicines and medical devices; therefore, the matter has been referred to the HSE for attention and direct reply to the Deputy.
