Question:

As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to Greenways. The planning, design, and construction of individual Greenways is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned.

In relation to new greenway proposals, it would be for the relevant local authority to conduct an initial assessment on the proposal and, if appropriate, submit a request to TII for funding consideration. This would then be assessed for feasibility and prioritisation against all other applications.

Noting their responsibilities in this matter, I have referred your question to TII for a direct reply. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a reply within 10 working days.

Driver Licences

Questions (125)

Paul McAuliffe

Question:

125. Deputy Paul McAuliffe asked the Minister for Transport to review the anomaly in relation to driver licence renewals (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [54410/25]

View answer

Written answers

As Minister of State for International & Road Transport, Logistics, Rail & Ports, I wish to advise that a driving licence can be renewed up to 3 months before the date of expiry of the licence. Licences are issued for 10, 3 or 1 year periods. The option to renew before the expiry of a licence is to facilitate drivers, particularly professional drivers, who may be travelling abroad when their licence is due to expire. The option to renew early is not mandatory. There is no cost for renewal of driving licence for applicants over 70.

Under the Road Safety Authority Act 2006, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has statutory responsibility for the National Driver Licence Service. I have therefore referred the question to the RSA for direct reply.

A referred reply was forwarded to the Deputy under Standing Orders.

126. Deputy John Paul O'Shea asked the Minister for Transport if he is aware of the ongoing issues with the Road Safety Authority’s driving test estimated waiting times; if he will explain why the estimated waiting times on the RSA portal are repeatedly extended rather than reflecting realistic timelines; his views on the impact this inaccuracy has on young people whose career or apprenticeship opportunities require a full driving licence; the measures being taken to ensure greater accuracy and fairness in providing applicants with test dates; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [54412/25]

Under the Road Safety Authority Act 2006, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has statutory responsibility for the National Driver Testing Service. Accordingly, the information requested is held by the RSA.

Given the RSA's responsibility in this matter, I have referred the Deputy's question to the RSA for direct, detailed response. Please contact my office if a reply is not received within ten days.

Pending this response, the Deputy will be aware that reducing driving test wait times has been one of my key priorities since taking office. The current national average wait time for a driver test is currently 10 weeks. This represents a significant reduction on the 27 week average wait time in April this year.

As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to the National Roads Programme. Under the Roads Acts 1993-2015 and in line with the National Development Plan (NDP), the operation and management of individual national roads is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned. This is also subject to the Infrastructure Guidelines and the necessary statutory approvals. In this context, TII is best placed to advise you in relation to the N70.

Regulation (EC) 261/2004 ("EU261") sets out common rules across the EU for compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of cancellation or long delay of flights or in the event of denied boarding.

Passengers must apply to their airline in the first instance to claim their entitlements under EU261. Anyone who has already corresponded with the airline but is dissatisfied with their response or has not received a reply after 6 weeks is advised to contact the relevant National Enforcement Body.

The Irish Aviation Authority has been designated as the National Enforcement Body for Regulation EU261 in the State. The IAA is the competent body to enforce the provisions of the Regulation arising from disruptions to flights scheduled to depart from airports based in the State and for flights arriving into the State from airports located in the countries outside the EU. I note that the Deputy's constituent has been in contact with the IAA in this regard and their complaint is under investigation.
