Government has approved the drafting of legislation to establish supports for the remediation of fire safety, structural safety and water ingress defects in purpose-built apartment buildings, including duplexes, constructed between 1991 and 2013.

An Interim Remediation Scheme (IRS), for the funding of emergency fire safety defect works in apartments and duplexes constructed between 1991 and 2013, has been in place since December 2023, to provide an acceptable level of fire safety in buildings pending introduction of the Statutory Scheme and completion of the full remedial works.

To qualify for the IRS, a building must be an apartment or duplex, have fire-safety defects and have been built between 1991 and 2013. Houses are not included in the current eligibility criteria. They do not fall within the scope of the scheme.

Neither myself or my Department has any remit in this matter- the management/ operation of the referenced scheme is a matter for the Housing Agency in the first instance. I am therefore not in a position to comment on the specific query raised.

All queries regarding applications to the Interim Remediation Scheme should be directed to Interim.remediation@housingagency.ie
