Deputy Barry Heneghan asked the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment if he will commission an independent and transparent assessment of the potential role, cost and risks of nuclear energy, including small modular reactors, in Ireland’s future energy mix; if such an assessment would include public engagement; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Nuclear power generation is prohibited in statute under the Electricity and Planning codes, each of which specifically precludes the generation of electricity via nuclear fission within Ireland. I have no plans to commission any assessment of the potential role of nuclear power generation in Ireland.

However, the right of States to determine their own energy mix is acknowledged. We expect that, where a State chooses to develop a nuclear power industry, this will be done in line with the highest international standards with respect to safety and environmental protection.
