As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to Greenways and Active Travel infrastructure. The planning, design, and construction of individual walkways and cycleways being funded by the Department of Transport is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the National Transport Authority (NTA), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned.

I understand that neither the TII nor the NTA currently have a scheme relating to a walkway/ cycleway connecting Killarney with the Gap of Dunloe. For new projects to be considered, Kerry County Council would need to carry out an initial assessment on the rationale for the proposal and, if appropriate, submit a request to TII or the NTA for the provision of funds. This would then be assessed for feasibility and prioritisation against all other applications for funding.
