This Department leads on cross-government policy to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

The Programme for Government, Securing Ireland's Future, commits my Department to publish and implement an updated National Strategy for Women and Girls. On the 18th of November 2025, I launched the new National Strategy for Women and Girls 2025-2030, marking a significant step towards meeting this commitment.

The Strategy sets seven overall objectives to address gender inequalities across a range of policy areas. These are:

1. Being Counted: Embed gender mainstreaming in public policy making.

2. Being Me: Reduce the prevalence and power of harmful gender norms and stereotypes.

3. Being a Leader: Enable equal leadership, visibility and participation of women.

4. Being Safe: Eradicate violence against women and harassment of women.

5. Having a Fair Share: Empower women through economic and financial equality.

6. Being Well: Enable women to maximise their health and wellbeing throughout their lives.

7. Being Supported: Acknowledge, reward and more equally share caring.

The new National Strategy runs from 2025 to 2030. Two action plans will be published, one at the outset, the other halfway through, to implement the Strategy. The Department is currently working with stakeholders and colleagues across Government in developing the first of these action plans, which is expected to be published early in 2026.

A Monitoring Committee, comprised of stakeholder representatives with relevant expertise, is in the process of being formed. This Committee will monitor and report on progress, providing both insight and feedback over the life of the Strategy.
