Local authorities and other authorities have powers under various Acts, including planning, housing and transport legislation, to acquire land compulsorily.

The Law Reform Commission published a report in 2023, which sets out a series of recommendations in respect of CPO processes, including draft legislative proposals. My Department will engage with the Department of Justice in connection with the aspects of these proposals that may assist with the delivery of housing and infrastructure, and in tackling vacancy and dereliction.
