Questions (301)

Grace Boland

Question:

301. Deputy Grace Boland asked the Minister for Transport whether any analysis has been carried out by his Department, the National Transport Authority or Iarnród Éireann on displacement effects arising from fare increases, including commuters travelling from Skerries choosing to drive to and board trains at Rush and Lusk railway station due to substantially lower fare costs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport; however, I am not involved in the day-to-day operations of public transport. The National Transport Authority (NTA) has statutory responsibility for securing the provision of public passenger transport services nationally, for the regulation of fares charged to passengers in respect of public transport services provided under public service obligation (PSO) contracts, and any research and/or analysis into the same.

In light of their responsibility in this area, I have forwarded the Deputy's question to the NTA and Iarnród Éireann for direct reply. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within ten working days.

A referred reply was forwarded to the Deputy under Standing Orders.
