Written answers

The use of water taxis from Dublin Port along the River Liffey to Chapelizod would be a commercial decision for a private operator. Any such operator would be required to apply to the Marine Survey Office in my Department for a survey of any proposed vessel to ensure compliance with the applicable statutory requirements. In addition, relevant local authorities, Dublin Port Company, and other relevant bodies should also be consulted.

My Department is aware that a privately operated ferry service was in place in 2019, transporting passengers between three points along the River Liffey: the 3Arena, Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, and the MV Cill Airne at North Wall Quay. The vessel was equipped to accept both Leap Card and cash fares. The service was supported by Dublin City Council and Dublin Port Company at that time; however, I have been advised that the service was not sustainable in that particular form and has since ceased operating.
