View answerThe School Transport Scheme is a significant operation managed by Bus Éireann on behalf of the Department of Education and Youth.?
The purpose of the Department's School Transport Scheme is, having regard to available resources, to support the transport to and from school of children who reside remote from their nearest school.
Under the terms of my Department’s Post Primary School Transport Scheme, children are eligible for transport where they reside not less than 4.8 km from their nearest post primary school/centre as determined by the Department/Bus Éireann, having regard to ethos and language.
Children who are eligible for school transport and who complete the application process on time are accommodated on school transport services where such services are in operation.
Bus Éireann have advised that the pupils referred to by the Deputy have applied for school transport for the 2025/26 year and are eligible to school referred. The family have a pick-up-point which is 2.0 km from their home. This pick-up-point has been deemed safe by the Service Supervisor. Bus Éireann have also advise that it is not feasible for the service to be brought closer to their homes due to vehicular access limitations and time constraints.
