View answerI welcome the ongoing efforts of the United States and others to achieve a just and lasting peace that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.
It is crucial that any agreement must uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, based on respect for the principles of the UN Charter. The fundamental principle that borders cannot be changed by force must be upheld.
Ireland will continue to support these efforts as part of the EU and through our participation in the Coalition of the Willing.
On 6 January 2026, I joined a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris, hosted by President Macron, with President Zelenskyy also present.
The meeting was part of ongoing efforts of the Coalition aimed at ending Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, to work with the US to guarantee Ukraine’s security for the long term and to intensify coordination on support for Ukraine, both now and in the future.
The ‘Paris Declaration’ published after the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris is a strong signal of support for Ukraine and recognises that a lasting peace agreement will require robust security guarantees for Ukraine.
This is not just vital for Ukraine, it is also vital for European security.
That is why our participation in groups like the Coalition of the Willing is important for us and why we welcome ongoing discussions on how the EU and its partners can contribute to security guarantees as part of a ceasefire agreement, in keeping with the Government's established policy on the provision of support for Ukraine.
The Government will continue to provide financial and non-lethal military support for Ukraine, and we are contributing to training the Ukrainian armed forces through the EU’s Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine.
