Towed Sonar capability has been provided for as part of the National Development Plan for the Defence Forces. The towed sonar capability is the first of its kind in Ireland, will be used for monitoring and surveillance in the subsea domain, thus significantly enhancing maritime security. Final approval was granted in May 2025 and a contract was agreed and signed on the 29 May 2025.

This new acquisition will enhance awareness below the surface, contributing to the overall maritime picture available to Naval Service and the wider Defence Forces. This is a complex project and a new capability, so work in training personnel and establishing the procedures and structures required within the Defence Forces has commenced, and will continue in the period up to the delivery and operationalisation of the system, with initial deliveries planned for 2027.

This new capability will be operated from the existing fleet, with no requirement for new vessels.
