192. Deputy Michael Cahill asked the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage if he will take into consideration the exceptionally wet weather and extend the burning season by a month, similar to Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10991/26]

The dates for burning are set down in primary legislation. Section 40 of the Wildlife Act 1976 prohibits the burning of vegetation from 1 March to 31 August.

As the dates are set out in primary legislation, I have no power or discretion to vary these dates. The season may only be varied by primary legislation enacted by the Oireachtas.
