A full review of the penalty point system was conducted by my Department, and scrutinised by the relevant Oireachtas committee, in 2012. A number of changes were made to penalty point legislation on foot of this review, including an increase in the number of points associated with certain offences.

The Road Traffic Act 2024 also made a number of changes to the penalty point system, including provision for a driver who is detected committing multiple penalty point offences in a single incident to now receive points for two of those offences, rather than one. These changes will be commenced as soon as the necessary technological and operational updates have been put in place.
