My Department is committed to delivering an efficient and responsive employment permit system that supports businesses while ensuring that Ireland continues to benefit from economic migration.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in demand for employment permits. In response, my Department implemented a series of operational improvements to address processing pressures. This included the introduction of more efficient internal processes and the rollout of the new Employment Permits Online system. Launched in April 2025 following a three-year development programme, this cloud-based system modernises how permits are processed and issued, and provides employers and applicants with real-time visibility of their applications through an enhanced online portal.

To support the functioning of the labour market, my Department prioritises applications from new entrants, as these are necessary to enable employers to fill vacancies that cannot otherwise be met.

Applicants seeking to renew their existing employment permit may continue to work while their renewal application is being processed, even where their current permit has expired. This ensures continuity for both employees and businesses.

My Department has taken additional steps to improve renewal processing, including the allocation of extra staffing resources to support the renewal queue. This targeted intervention has reduced renewal processing times by several weeks, and further work is ongoing to sustain and build on this progress.

My Department will continue to maintain and invest in a modern, effective employment permit system capable of meeting the needs of a dynamic labour market.
