Guidelines issued by the Private Security Authority (PSA) on identity badges are intended to help licence holders and their employers understand the legal requirements on the wearing of identity badges issued by the PSA. These guidelines were reviewed by the PSA in December 2025 and require licence cards to be worn by an individual when on duty, with the licence number clearly visible.
I am advised by the PSA that, in the event that someone cannot make a mental or written note of the licence number due to a disability, as defined within the Disability Act 2005, the guidelines require the licence holder to provide the requestor with an alternative and equal opportunity to verify the licence details.
Where a visually impaired person wishes to verify the details of a licensed security guard, the licence holder may provide the relevant licence details verbally or, where feasible, in writing. Once in possession of these details, the individual may verify them through the register on the PSA website www.psa-gov.ie, or by contacting the Private Security Authority directly by telephone to confirm the licence details. The PSA also has a designated Disabilities Officer to assist with such queries.
