Salmonid waters are included in the Protected Area Register under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The River Corrib, but not Lough Corrib, is listed as a salmonid water as per SI No. 293/1988 – European Communities (Quality of Salmonid Waters) Regulations 1988. All the salmonid waters listed in the Corrib catchment are also included in the Lough Corrib Special Area for Conservation (SAC). The Lough Corrib SAC includes salmon as a qualifying interest with the Habitats Directive also providing protection for salmon as well as the WFD.
