As with all Memoranda for Government concerning Ireland’s participation in international agreements, a proposed decision to withdraw from an international agreement is brought to Government by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment has confirmed that it is intended that Ireland withdraw from the Energy Charter Treaty in an expeditious manner. Officials in our respective Departments have been working closely to progress this matter as soon as possible.

I expect to bring the relevant Memorandum to Government in early course and that the process of formally leaving the Treaty will be underway in the second quarter of this year.
