Sinéad Gibney

Question:

138. Deputy Sinéad Gibney asked the Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment if his Department is concerned by the statements by the RTÉ Director General with regard to the import of 'expertise' from the British production market, for which trade unions have highlighted concerns on the possibility to undermine the domestic labour market; and if his Department will take active measures to support Irish media producers. The Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport is responsible for media and broadcasting policy, public service broadcasting funding, and legislative and policy oversight of RTÉ and TG4. RTÉ is a statutory corporation and is operationally independent. This Department nor the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport has any role in RTÉ’s day-to-day operations or editorial decisions.

My Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment’s role is limited to economy-wide responsibilities, including employment law and standards, labour market policy, skills development, and competition. Matters relating to public service broadcasting, governance, and RTÉ’s operational strategy fall within the remit of the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.
