The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána under section 33 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, which includes determining the manner in which Garda personnel are distributed and stationed throughout the State.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that during 2025 and to-date in 2026 that An Garda Síochána have held one competition, "Secondment to the Department of Justice, within the Irish Passenger Information Unit (IPIU), Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB)". I am informed that there were 29 Sergeant applications and 41 Garda applications to this competition.
