The current HSE Whole Time Equivalent ceiling for 2026 is 136,606.

The number of WTE employed by the HSE at the end of March 2026 was 130,843, an increase of almost 2,000 since the beginning of the year.

This means that, subject to fiscal rules on public spending, the HSE can hire a further 5,763 WTE without breaching the existing ceiling.
