I recently published Ireland's second Whole of Government Circular Economy Strategy which provides for the development of a Circularity Roadmap for the Construction Sector in 2026.
To transition to a more circular construction sector, the strategy recognises that the delivery of housing and essential infrastructure is a national priority and measures under the proposed Roadmap will support the timely sustainable delivery of both.
The Construction & Demolition (C&D) sector in Ireland generated an estimated 9 million tonnes of waste in 2023, up from 8.3 million tonnes in 2022, which is half of all the waste generated in Ireland. C&D waste is also the largest waste stream in Ireland in terms of volume and weight.
The Roadmap will set the basis for circular construction considering all life-cycle phases. The focus will be to promote a long service life, flexibility of use, modular construction, reuse of components, ability to recycle the construction materials used and the use of the highest possible share of sustainable construction materials and recycled materials.
Continued engagement with the Construction/Built Environment Sector will be central to agreeing the Roadmap’s actions and targets. As such, a new ‘Circularity for Construction Working Group’, which will include nominees from representative groups, will be established in the coming weeks with a view to developing the Roadmap for publication this year.
