The Government is committed to improving the accessibility of all forms of public transport for disabled people .
As part of the design and development of the National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People 2025-2030, and in line with the whole-of-government framework set out in the Strategy, extensive engagement took place between the Department of Children, Disability and Equality and all government departments and public agencies leading on the delivery of commitments and priority actions contained within the Strategy. This process included engagement with the Department of Transport which, in conjunction with relevant public bodies and government departments, is leading on the delivery of commitments and priority actions under Pillar Five of the Strategy.
Pillar Five focuses on transport and mobility and commits to improving the accessibility and expanding the availability of public transport options across urban and rural areas. It also contains commitments to the development of more accessible built environments, so as to remove the barriers that disabled people still face across society. Additional commitments within this Pillar are to providing enhanced personal mobility supports and options to support disabled people who can’t access or use public transport.
Since the launch of the Strategy in September 2025, and the subsequent publication of the First Programme Plan of Actions 2025-2026 in December 2025, my officials have had ongoing engagement across government, including with colleagues in the Department of Transport.
