Questions (409)

Roderic O'Gorman

Question:

409. Deputy Roderic O'Gorman asked the Minister for Transport his views on whether the cut-off point of 16 hours of lectures/class time per week for eligibility of the student Leap card is appropriate, given that additional reading hours often amount to up to 40 hours per week in many courses, and given that the purpose of the student Leap card is to reduce financial burdens on all students; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport. However, I am not involved in the day-to-day operations of public transport. The National Transport Authority (NTA) has responsibility for the regulation of fares charged to passengers in respect of public transport services provided under public service obligation (PSO) contracts, including the student leap card.

In light of the NTA's responsibility in this area, I have forwarded the Deputy's question to the NTA for direct reply. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within ten working days.

A referred reply was forwarded to the Deputy under Standing Orders.
