Questions (417)

Albert Dolan

Question:

417. Deputy Albert Dolan asked the Minister for Transport whether Iarnród Éireann or the National Transport Authority have undertaken any review of fare structures on the Athenry-Galway rail line in light of concerns regarding disparities between fares charged to commuters on regional rail services and those charged on comparable commuter journeys within the Dublin area; whether consideration is being given to classifying the Athenry-Galway route as a commuter service for fare purposes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for policy and overall funding in relation to public transport. However, I am not involved in the day-to-day operations of public transport. The National Transport Authority (NTA) has responsibility for the regulation of fares charged to passengers in respect of public transport services provided under public service obligation (PSO) contracts, in this case Iarnród Éireann.

In light of the NTA's responsibility in this area, I have forwarded the Deputy's question to the NTA for direct reply. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a response within ten working days.

A referred reply was forwarded to the Deputy under Standing Orders.
