Road traffic laws are enforced by Gardaí assigned to Roads Policing and as part of the day-to-day duties of uniformed Gardaí nationwide. This includes a programme of high-visibility road safety and enforcement operations carried out in partnership with other state agencies. My Department has no operational role in these matters and does not collate or hold data on the number of Fixed Charge Penalty Notices (FCPN) issued for any offence.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that since the implementation of legislation to address the regulation of non-compliant registration plates by An Garda Síochána in October 2025 there have been 49 FCPNs issued for non-compliant number plates where the vehicle type was a motorcycle as of April 2026. This information is based upon operational data from the FCPS system as of 21 May 2026 and is liable to change.
I understand that if an individual does not pay a fixed charge amount on receipt of a Fixed Charge Notice at any of the three payment points, they will be summonsed to appear in court and, if convicted of a fixed charge offence, the ensuing fine is paid to the Courts Service.
The management of the courts, operational matters and logistical functions, are matters for the Courts and the Judiciary. As a result, my Department does not keep statistics on convictions in the courts or the number of driver numbers recorded by the court on conviction. The Courts Service has a dedicated email address for the provision of information to members of the Oireachtas. That email address is oireachtasenquiries@courts.ie.
