My Department received a Letter of Formal Notice in February 2024 from the European Commission regarding 11 agglomerations considered to be in breach of different provisions of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. In response to the Letter of Formal Notice, my Department made a detailed submission to the European Commission in April 2024. My Department then met with the Commission in September 2025 to discuss the submission. Following that meeting, my Department made further submissions in October 2025 and November 2025, which included compliance data from the affected agglomerations.

As noted in these submissions, work at seven agglomerations is now complete while work is continuing on the remaining four locations namely Moville, Kilkee, Lahinch and Mitchelstown.
