The Environmental Protection Agency has granted €657,403 in funding to a project called Regenerative Value Systems for Irish Grown Wool, which will examine viable scouring solutions in the Irish wool sector. Wool washing or scouring is a key step in wool processing as it removes grease and dirt and prepares wool for spinning and dyeing. There are a number of factors that have to be considered in relation to scouring of wool, in particular the potential environmental and public health impacts. These impacts include the large amount of water required, the water pollution, chemical hazards and airborne bacteria. Another consideration is the scale and economic viability of such a plant.

The project team will investigate innovative and scalable methods for scouring Irish wool. Bio-refining, ultrasound and enzyme use will be assessed to improve results and produce better fibres. Another key goal is to cut wastewater and energy needs. The project is set to run until 2028.

The outcomes of the research will inform Government of the potential next steps in relation to scouring of wool.
