Where a connection to the public wastewater network is feasible, homeowners should engage with Uisce Éireann regarding the connection process and any applicable connection arrangements.
For areas that are not served by public wastewater infrastructure, my Department’s Rural Water Programme includes measures under which local authorities may apply for grant support for community-led wastewater projects in limited and appropriate circumstances.
There is no automatic entitlement to grant support. Applications for funding are assessed against the programme’s eligibility criteria, including technical feasibility, environmental benefits and value for money, before funding decisions are made.
The responsibility for the provision of wastewater services and the associated costs rests with the property owners concerned.
The most appropriate solution will depend on the particular circumstances, including the availability of public wastewater infrastructure, the number of properties involved and the characteristics of the area concerned. Accordingly, where a community-led wastewater project is being considered, the relevant local authority should be contacted in the first instance.
