Deputy Malcolm Byrne asked the Taoiseach if there is a specific policy within his Department that seeks to preclude those elected to local authorities from any boards that he may appoint; the rationale behind any such policy; and the way in which it aligns with encouraging participation in local government. View answerI appoint members to the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) under the National Economic and Social Development Office Act 2006.
I also appoint members to the National Statistics Board (NSB) under the Statistics Act 1993.
As set out in the legislation, most of these board appointments are made on the basis of nominations from third party organisations or are public servants appointed in connection with their role and responsibilities.
Where appropriate and consistent with the legislation, vacancies on the NESC and NSB are advertised on stateboards.ie in accordance with the Guidelines on Appointments to State Boards.
My Department does not have a policy that specifies exclusions from state board membership.
