The provision of library services including the provision of buildings is primarily a matter for local authorities in their capacity as library authorities under the Local Government Act 2001. Accordingly, the construction of Newbridge Library, County Archives and Cultural Centre is a matter for Kildare County Council.
As the Deputy will be aware, the Libraries Capital Programme 2023-2027 is investing €22.6m in 11 state-of-the-art library infrastructure projects, including the Newbridge Library, County Archives and Cultural Centre. In June, Stage 4 – Approval to Award Contract issued to Kildare County Council in respect of the Newbridge Library, County Archives and Cultural Centre, under my Department’s Four Stage Capital Management Process.
The project commenced on 17 July, and my colleague Minister Martin Heydon and I were delighted to turn the sod on site on 30 July, marking the commencement of construction.
As is standard practice where funding is approved by my Department, my officials remain in contact with Kildare County Council, receiving regular project progress reports throughout the entire process from application stage to official opening. In the latest progress report provided by the Council, key activity includes the erection of perimeter hoardings and entrance gates, the removal and disposal of asbestos by specialist contractor (due for completion this month), and the demolition of a single storey building.
I am advised by Kildare County Council that the expected date for completion of construction is December 2027.
