A number of Government Departments, State bodies and public authorities have specific roles regarding the safety and regulation of lithium-ion battery electricity storage systems (Li-BESS) in Ireland and these agencies are best served to deal with the elements that are under their respective remits.

In July 2024, my Department published the Electricity Storage Policy Framework for Ireland. Chapter 4 of the Policy Framework provides an overview of the safety and regulatory regime in place for grid scale electricity storage systems, outlining the roles and remits of the relevant bodies.

In recognition of the wide-ranging nature of electricity storage safety and regulation, my Department, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment engage regularly regarding the safety and regulation of grid-connected electricity storage systems.
