Deputy Peadar Tóibín asked the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science the number of staff vacancies, by grade, in his Department at the end of August 2023 and August 2024; and the number of staff, by grade, on a career break of more than five years and more than six years, at the end of August 2023 and August 2024. View answerIn my Department, staff figures are recorded on a quarterly basis. The number of staff vacancies for Quarter 3 (up to the end of September) in 2023 was 34 and for Quarter 3 in 2024 was 43.

Regarding the question of staff in my Department taking career breaks for more than 5 or 6 years, my Department was established in August 2020 and there were no staff members on a career break of more than five years and more than six years, at the end of August 2023 and August 2024.
