I remain in close contact with my EU counterparts on the matter as the situation develops and I discussed it with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and a number of other colleagues on Monday 19 January. Heads of State and Government will discuss Greenland at an extraordinary meeting of the European Council later this week. It is also expected that it will be discussed at the Foreign Affairs Council on 29 January which I am scheduled to attend.
Ireland's position is that the future of Greenland is a matter to be determined by Denmark and by the Greenlandic people, in line with well-established democratic principles and international law. This is a position that will not change. Respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of States is non-negotiable. It is a fundamental principle of the United Nations Charter and of international law.
