231. Deputy Roderic O'Gorman asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if she plans to have an Irish Consulate General Office based in Cancun, Mexico. [5745/26]
View answerIreland and Mexico have enjoyed excellent diplomatic relations since their establishment in 1975 and there is an Irish Embassy in Mexico City.
Mexico is an important bilateral partner for Ireland and my Department has regular and positive engagement with Mexico through its Embassy in Dublin. Ireland’s bilateral relationship with Mexico has been further strengthened through the implementation of the Global Ireland Strategy for Latin America and the Caribbean, which seeks to enhance relations with the countries of the region across several key areas of engagement.
There are no current plans to open a Consulate General in Cancun. Ireland has a long-serving Honorary Consul, appointed to Cancun since 2008. New Irish Honorary Consuls in the major cities of Monterrey and Guadalajara were also appointed in 2024.
Any decision on the opening of a new embassy or consulate is considered by reference to Ireland’s national, political and economic priorities. Against these and other factors, the Government keeps the matter of opening further embassies or consulates under ongoing review.
