In the face of unprecedented global economic uncertainty, it is important for Ireland to diversify our markets with new, reliable global partners.

As members of the European Union, Ireland has access to the largest trade network in the world, with individual agreements covering trade relations with over 70 countries. That network of agreements is being continuously strengthened, with several currently under negotiation.

In an increasingly volatile international trade landscape it is of vital importance to Ireland's growth and prosperity that we continue to champion the positive impacts of increased market access for Irish and European goods and services. The EU’s ambitious suite of FTAs is integral as we look to diversify our critical supply chains and open up export markets for Irish companies.

The European Commission, which holds exclusive competence for negotiating trade agreements, has been working towards delivering a comprehensive and balanced FTA between the EU and Australia. However, negotiations have been paused since October 2023.

We are awaiting the formal resumption of negotiations between the EU and Australia. A labour mobility scheme may be considered as part of this process.
