The safeguarding of all applicants to, and personnel in, the Defence Forces is of paramount importance to the Defence Forces and they advise me that there are several stages of the induction process, each of which has in-built safeguards geared towards the protection of applicants.Videos containing detailed descriptions of each stage of this process are available to prospective candidates via links on military.ie
At the initial application stage, candidates may only submit applications for recruitment competitions through the official website of the Defence Forces, military.ie. This controlled, centralised process ensures that all applicants are processed through a standardised pathway from the outset, thereby ensuring consistency and fairness. In addition, applicants who are deemed unsuccessful on eligibility grounds are eliminated from the competition at this stage.
Psychometric Assessments are used as a standardised and scientific method to objectively measure an individual's personality traits, intelligence, abilities, behavioural style and aptitude, forming an early layer of screening to assess suitability for service. Candidates who experience difficulties with this stage of the recruitment process may contact the recruitment office directly to outline their specific requirements so that they can be appropriately supported.
The Defence Forces Induction Fitness Test is a standardised assessment conducted at military installations under the supervision of trained Defence Forces personnel. This acts as a protective gatekeeping measure. Physical Training Instructors complete warm-up exercises and demonstrate correct form before any physical activity commences. This supervised environment provides an important layer of protection, ensuring that no candidate undertakes physical exertion without instruction or oversight. in addition, terms and conditions booklets for recruitment competitions contain detailed descriptions of the fitness requirements for entry as well as guidance regarding preparation for the fitness test.
The interview process is competency-based. All interviewers will have completed an interview skills training programme and are subject to annual certification by the Defence Forces Organisational Psychologist.
Applicants must be in good mental and physical health and free from any physical defect or condition, or past history of serious illness, that is likely to interfere with the efficient performance of their duties. This exam has a pass or fail outcome and ensures that no candidate can take on the physical demands of recruit training without medical clearance.
Additionally, throughout the process, recruitment staff in the Joint Recruitment Office of the Defence Forces are available to applicants to support them if they are experiencing any challenges with the process and any personnel who engage with applicants receive appropriate training/briefings regarding the safeguarding of all applicants to the Defence Forces.
The Irish Defence Forces value diversity and inclusion and foster a culture of respect, dignity, and equality for all members.
