The Department of Education and Youth has a number of frameworks in place to deliver modular accommodation, all utilising modern methods of construction for the provision of primary, post primary and special education needs (SEN) school accommodation. The Department has a strong focus on value for money in all of its building projects. In general terms, the cost of modular accommodation can be similar to traditional building in medium to larger scale projects (over 200m2). For smaller projects economies of scale mean it can be more expensive. The benefits of modular in relation to quality, consistency and speed of delivery of teaching spaces must be weighed up against the cost, when considering overall value for money and the most appropriate approach in a particular school context.
