There are 390 schools on Minister-owned sites which are covered by State indemnity. Of these 297 are not community and comprehensive schools. However, the full cohort of 390 schools located on Minister-owned property falls under the State indemnity arrangement.

The Department does not require Boards of Management of schools on Minister-owned property to hold buildings insurance as the principle of State indemnity applies.

As set out in the Governance Manual for Boards of Management of Primary Schools, Boards of schools on Minister owned sites are required to put in place appropriate insurance cover, including public liability, contents, and employers’ liability insurance.
