The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána under Section 33 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, which includes all operational policing matters, such as the distribution, deployment, maintenance and repair arrangements of the Garda fleet across the State. The Commissioner is independent in his functions under Section 34 of the Act.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that records are maintained in relation to vehicle maintenance and repairs. However, the operational status of Garda vehicles is not static and can change frequently as vehicles enter and leave maintenance programmes, undergo inspections, or await parts and repairs.
For this reason, a reliable and accurate figure for the current number of Garda vehicles out of service due to maintenance issues, broken down by Garda Division, is not available.
Garda authorities have also advised that repair time information is not recorded in a format that would allow for the calculation of a meaningful average repair time by Garda Division. Repair durations can vary significantly depending on the nature and complexity of the work required, the availability of parts and the type of vehicle involved.
