The Temporary Protection Directive is currently in place across the EU until March 2028.
Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BoTP) hold a temporary permission to remain in Ireland and, for the duration of temporary protection, continue to enjoy the rights provided under the Directive, including the right to reside in the State and to access social welfare, education and employment.
It is not possible for a person to apply for international protection while also benefiting from temporary protection.
A person must withdraw their Temporary Protection permission before being able to apply for international protection.
It is important to note that a person who applies for international protection does not have immediate access to employment, social welfare or international travel in the same way as a person benefiting from temporary protection.
The Temporary Protection Transition Scheme, which opened for applications on 30 September 2026, is intended to provide an alternative permission for Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection who wish to remain in Ireland after the Temporary Protection Directive ends.
Eligible applicants will be granted a residence permission of up to two years, renewable thereafter, enabling them to continue living and working in Ireland. Time spent on this permission will contribute towards eligibility for naturalisation.
The scheme is aimed at supporting those who have established themselves in Ireland through employment and independent living, while providing greater certainty regarding their future status.
