asked the Minister for Finance the estimated gross tax yield to the State for 1970-71 from tobacco.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tobacco Gross Tax Yield.
The answer is in the form of a tabular statement and I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.
Following is the statement:—
TOBACCO
Estimated net receipts† of customs and excise duties*
|
Year |
Customs duty |
Excise duty |
|
1970-71 |
£51.2 million |
Nil |
†It will be observed that the statement refers to "net receipts", not "gross yield" as requested by the Deputy. Figures for gross yield would include an amount of duty repayable, for example, in respect of cigarettes exported and would not be meaningful in the present context. The figures are consequently based on an estimate of clearances for home consumption.
*Turnover tax is also payable at the rate of 5% on receipts from retail sales. Separate receipts from this tax in respect of tobacco sales are not available.
