The information requested is currently being compiled and I will write to the Deputy directly once the information is to hand.
The following deferred reply was received under Standing Order 51.
I refer to Parliamentary Question No. 1065 of 17 January 2024 where you asked: “….. the number of foreign nationals who successfully applied for and received Irish citizenship, who are now permanently living outside the State, and if, by so doing, they relinquish their Irish citizenship; and if she will make a statement on the matter.”
As you will recall, the information was not available at the time of answering.
Unfortunately, the statistics requested are not compiled or recorded in such a manner to identify the answer to this specific question.
Under the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956 as amended, the Minister for Justice has the power to revoke a certificate of naturalisation where an individual has been ordinarily resident outside of the State for seven years after naturalisation. However, permanent relocation alone does not result in a person’s Irish citizenship being considered relinquished. Any decision to revoke a certificate of naturalisation is individually accessed and subject to the provisions of the Act.
