Ceisteanna (90)

Thomas Pringle

Ceist:

90. Deputy Thomas Pringle asked the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications whether his Department has sought agreement to terminate the memorandum of understanding on gas between the European Union, the State of Israel and the Arab Republic of Egypt in light of Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza and increasing settler violence in the West Bank; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The authority to conclude international agreements such as this MOU is exercised on behalf of the Irish Government by my colleague, the Minister for Foreign Affairs.  As Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications I am responsible for relevant negotiations but not for the Government decision.  Ireland has been a consistently strong voice in Europe against the war on Gaza. The escalating violence across the region and in Lebanon is of great concern. Ireland’s consistent focus has been on the need for an immediate ceasefire and hostage release deal and a surge in humanitarian assistance to Gaza. Ireland remains convinced that the implementation of the two-State solution is the only way to establish lasting peace and security for both Israel and Palestine, and the wider region. We need to find a way to a political process than can achieve this.
