Two new fire stations at Athenry and Loughrea were prioritised for inclusion in the 2021 – 2025 fire services Capital programme. The new Athenry fire station was officially opened in November 2024. In October 2025 the Council was approved to seek tenders for the construction of a new fire station at Loughrea.
In correspondence with my Department, Galway County Council has indicated several new fire station projects at Galway City, Portumna and Ballinasloe as priority projects the Council is proposing for inclusion on the Fire Services Capital Programme 2026 – 2030.
It would be premature to comment on the proposed Fire Service Capital Programme 2026 - 2030 prior to finalisation of a new fire services capital programme, following consultation with all local authorities.
My Department will work closely with Galway County Council to progress their identified priority infrastructural projects, within the context of the totality of requests from fire authorities countrywide for capital funding.
